How to Play basketbadle
basketbadle is a free daily basketball puzzle site. Every day at midnight US Eastern Time, six brand-new puzzles go live — the same six for every player in the world. There are no accounts, no downloads and no paywall: open the site, play, and compare how you did with everyone else who tried that day.
This page explains every game mode, how guessing and scoring work, and a few tips to get you started. If you want deeper tactics afterwards, read the full strategy guide.
The daily format
A new set of puzzles unlocks at midnight Eastern Time (the same moment for players everywhere — your puzzle is identical to a player's in Tokyo or Madrid). Each mode is a self-contained puzzle you can play once per day. Your progress, streaks and statistics are saved locally in your browser, so you can close the tab and come back later without losing anything.
When you solve a puzzle, the site shows you how many people have solved that mode today, so you always know how you stack up against the wider community.
The six game modes
1. Guess the Player
Name the hidden basketball player. After each guess, the board reveals how your guessed player compares to the mystery player across attributes like team, conference, position, age, height and nationality. A green tile means an exact match; an arrow tells you whether the answer is older or younger, taller or shorter. Use the clues to narrow down the field guess by guess.
2. Hoop Grid
Fill a 3x3 grid where every cell sits at the intersection of two categories — for example a team on the row and an achievement, nationality or position on the column. Each correct answer is a player who satisfies both. Rarer, more surprising answers score better, so there is always a reason to dig deeper than the obvious superstar.
3. Career Trail
Identify a player from the trail of teams they have played for, revealed one stop at a time. Early clues are deliberately vague — plenty of players have worn a given jersey — but each new team narrows it down. Solve it in as few reveals as possible.
4. Arena Spotter
Recognise a basketball arena from a single photograph. Some are unmistakable cathedrals of the sport; others are quietly iconic. Architectural details, seat colours and signage are your friends here.
5. Starting Five
Deduce the team from its starting lineup, shown only as flags, jersey numbers and positions — no names. You are reading the fingerprints of a roster: nationalities, number conventions and positional shape all point to one club.
6. Odd One Out
Three players share a hidden trait — the same draft year, the same college, the same career milestone — and one does not. Spot the impostor. The challenge is working out what the connection even is before you can find who breaks it.
How guessing and scoring work
Every mode is about solving in as few guesses (or reveals) as possible. There is no timer and no penalty for thinking — only your guess count matters. Fewer guesses is a better result, and your distribution of scores builds up over time in your local statistics so you can watch yourself improve.
Because every player worldwide gets the identical daily puzzle, scores are directly comparable. The "X players solved today" counter you see after finishing is a live, honest read on how the rest of the world is doing.
Quick tips for new players
- Spend your first guess on information, not a hero. A broad, well-known
player reveals more attributes than a wild long shot.
- Read the arrows, not just the colours. Age and height arrows quietly
eliminate huge chunks of the player pool.
- In Hoop Grid, go obscure on purpose. Uncommon correct answers score
higher than the superstar everyone picks.
- In Career Trail, think franchises before names. Map the teams first, then
find the player who connects them.
- Come back daily. Streaks are part of the fun, and the puzzles are tuned
to be solvable in a coffee break.
